New Delhi: Aarushi-Hemraj murder mystery may have caught the imagination of the public across India, but there was a similar case in 1959 which caught the headlines of newspapers. It was the Manekshaw Nanawati case.




The intensity of that case was such that the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru and former governor of Maharashtra, Vijayalaxmi Pandit had to intervene.

The incident took place in 1959 when the 37-year old naval officer Manekshaw Nanawati shot his businessman friend, Prem Ahuja.

The murder was a result of an extra-marital affair that Manek’s Anglo-India wife was into. Silvia was having an extra-marital affair with Manek’s friend Prem Ahuja. On learning about this, Prem was shot dead by Manek. He later surrendered himself before the commissioner of police.
