The Black Dog Gang was very important to the five boys. Many children would be bored, walking around, looking for something to do but Frankie, Mickey, Aidan, Bernard and Gordon went a created something to keep them active and on their toes, each trying to outdo each other with ideas for the Black Dog Gang. This gave Frankie a boost in morale and kept the boys happy. But when there was an offer of money the Black Dog Gang responded, breeding rats to earn some money for themselves. This would have been a good experience, had it of not backfired for Frankie and Mickey. But it did teach them an important lesson, that life was not all fun and games. The plague was also a wake-up call, that the protection of the home did not stop everything. It also taught Frankie that recklessness can lead to undesirable results.
